Icon106 What current pop music are you listening to?

Well, first a bit of a rant: I wish I could actually contribute to the topic of this thread. DD and I are in need of a contemporary pop infusion. There are only so many times we can listen to Abbey Road and my old hip-hop/jazz/fusion/funk compilations before we get tired. (Well, to be honest, it's just me. She's like "play the Octopus song again!") I invested a dollar on a used CD of pop music but it turned out to be a dud (and also older than I thought). Almost all of them are listenable but there was nothing on it I thought was great. (She hasn't heard it yet. Doesn't seem to be anything she would really like.) I just discovered Rhianna's Umbrella (excellent) from that cover of it that was going around social media (also excellent, in its own way), saw the date and was like, WTH, this music is already ten years old! What am I missing right now? Since she and I are the only ones in the family who love to listen to music, the time we have to browse is limited. I mentioned listening to the ones on the top ten list, which helps, but any specific album or song suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked out Rihanna's other hits?
What about Flo Rida?

Well, first off, define current, please. This year? The past 2 years? The past 5 years?

We've spoken of this before, but my suggestions are the preset current hits stations on Pandora or the other internet stations, YouTube (create a playlist, or subscribe to a new artists' Vevo). Re internet radio, C89.5 (c895.org) is electronic dance music you can listen to anywhere. Oh, and it's a non-commercial station so the ads are extremely limited (no more than about 45 seconds at a time).

What do I listen to? I find I get tired of a constant diet of the new stuff, so I switch back and forth between Jack FM (we play what we want [although it's generally 20-30 years old]) and C89.5

I looked for a list of popular beat combos for you, but I couldn't find one. Even the internet doesn't know, apparently.

The last music I listened to just now was some Slayer (Reign in Blood) but that's not really "pop" or indeed "current", so it probably doesn't help..

Thank you. I let it play through several tunes and some of them were really good. I liked that "Fifth Harmony - Worth It ft. Kid Ink". ETA - Oh, that Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk ft. Bruno Mars too. That's a good one. I'd heard some of Bruno Mars because he's one DS likes.

Current for me means something I haven't heard yet, basically, but I was thinking from the most recent two or three years. I was in radio during the first half of the 90's, mostly playing (and talking through) US and UK top 40 with some oldies and world music and jazz mixed in (I was allowed to play whatever - if the listeners didn't call in to complain!). So I feel familiar with pop up to about 1994. After that it's like I blacked out for two decades. No radio work, not even FM listening. (I've never really been into j-pop. There are some local bands I like but I just go see them live and buy their CDs.) I've started to catch up on all that but still haven't heard much of the recent stuff (which seems to be getting better than those two decades too). DS tells me what he likes but I wanted to know what specific pop music you guys listen to.

Recent music I like that falls under the broad category of "pop" tends to sound retro '80s (which probably just means I'm old). Daft Punk had a big hit with Get Lucky in 2013 which made for kind of a revival of that sound.

Tegan and Sara - Stop Desire

Tuxedo - 2nd Time Around

Shura - What's It Gonna Be?

Bruno Mars - 24K Magic

The New Pornographers - High Ticket Attractions

The 1975 - The Sound

Lake Street Dive - Side Pony

Of Monsters and Men - Wolves Without Teeth

The Lumineers - Ophelia

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Simple and Sure

OK, I deserve that!
I didn't mean to make it about my hopelessness when it comes to doing my own discovery. Just wanted a thread similar to What Books Are You Reading or Shows Are You Watching.

But to rant-rave a little more: Linking through from what KirkMcD posted, listening on an hour commute this morning, I found the Flo Rida tune Good Feeling. So I was very happy. Listened twice. Then I looked at the date; It's like five years old! It's like I've been living on another planet.

Somewhere in the Centauri star system, based off the length of time it took to get from Earth to your car. At least you're not lost...

ETA: The question is, how did you manage to post here so quickly?

It's just that Pop music is really subjective. As most people get older, they stop liking current Pop music and stay with what was popular when they were growing up.

With that said:

You'll probably like Pitbull.

I find that to be true, but I'm still thankful for the rock station I listen to which has introduced me to:
Cage the Elephant
The Pretty Reckless
Kaleo

Plus they play a lot of the classic rock I love!

Ganz, the same thing happened to me--except I think I stopped listening to new music about 5 years before you did, and started realizing what I'd missed about 5 years ago. I also had the same experience with finding new music only to realize it wasn't that new.

I can't give you links to songs right now because I'm posting from work, but I'll try to come back to this from home tonight.

No, "A popular beat combo, m'lud" was supposedly the answer to a judge in the 1960s who asked "What are The Beatles?". But apparently the whole story is apocryphal anyway...

This song has been out for over a year in the rest of the world, but was just recently released in the US.

Dua Lipa - Be The One

I don't know where it counts on the pop scale, but here are the relatively new things I'm listening to:
Halsey
Lorde
Elle King
Norah Jones
Imagine Dragons
The Weeknd

A few others, but those are the ones I've listened to a full album. All of them are good, but I'm enjoying Halsey the most at the moment.

I have a confession to make. I've been listening to an indie artist.
