Patrick has become the first woman in the history of NASCAR to win the pole for any race, and she will lead the field to the green flag in the biggest race on the NASCAR schedule. The previous record was held by Janet Guthrie, who qualified ninth in 1977 at Talladega and Bristol.

For Patrick, who announced her arrival to the racing world by winning Rookie of the Year at the Indianapolis 500 in 2005, winning the pole at Daytona was a surprising outcome, given her limited experience on the circuit. It does, however, remind the sports world that this is no longer a sport in which women can't do anything that men can.

I was at the Indy 500 in 2005. The crowd would stand and watch the leaders go by, as they usually do, but most of them did the same every time Danica came by as well. She's a helluva a driver though IIRC, she did make a rookie mistake that year. But, it is okay to make rookie mistakes when you are a rookie.

She is using, arguably, the best race car in the world, so the pressure is on. Good luck to her.
