Icon13 Kansas lawmakers pass sweeping anti-abortion legislation

Kansas legislators gave final passage to a sweeping anti-abortion measure, sending Gov. Sam Brownback a bill that declares life begins “at fertilization” while blocking tax breaks for abortion providers and banning abortions performed solely because of the baby's sex.

So, to recap - we may well get gay marriage but lose abortion.

Apparently we can't have too much progress, so something has to roll back to make up for it.

I admit I'm not comfortable with an abortion based solely on the baby's sex. But how do you prove that's the reason? I suppose you could make people decide before they can learn what sex the fetus is, but that would clash with the "make them look at the ultrasound" movement...

You ever get the feeling you are croaking while trying to climb a water well?

A better question might be, have the people behind that bill ever actually met anyone who did want an abortion for that reason?

I think that the gist is that you will have to prove that you didn't want the abortion for that reason.

There are tons of bad reasons (IMO at least) to get an abortion, but we can't have it both ways, either it's a woman's body and her choice (hint, this is the correct answer) or it isn't. If she decides she doesn't want a black baby, or a baby that is going to have downs or something, that's her call.

Which is the problem, not only because it's nobody's damn business, but because it might not be provable.

In addition to all that it becomes harder to fight the law because it looks on the surface (to stupid and/or misinformed people) that your problem is with a law that prevents you from aborting a fetus because of it's sex. So, down the road, some politician can say "Candidate John Jackson says he embraces American values, but he opposed a bill making it illegal to abort babies due to their sex. John Jackson, not right for babies, not right for America"
