Icon105 Happy as a clam

Comment: In Maine (perhaps New England and God knows where else) we have a saying...
"He/She is happy as a clam!" As far as I know, clams are not Christian so
they've missed that joy. They live in wet sand, ugh. I have no clue about
their sex life, that might be it but damned if I know. As it eludes me as
to what clams could have, do or be so happy about I turn to you; what is
the origin of that saying?

^^^^^ (my avatar and screen name are the answer )

The way I understand it the full expression is 'Happy as a clam at high tide'. The clam is safe and happy at high tide since clamming is normally done at low tide when the sand is exposed.

So if you're "damned if [you] know" about clams' sex lives, does that make you more or less happy than the heathen clams?
