Judge West Virginia House votes to impeach entire state Supreme Court

The West Virginia House of Delegates voted on Monday to impeach the state’s entire Supreme Court, a remarkable move occasioned by reports of extravagant spending by the court’s five members, one of whom resigned in July.

This has a partisan tinge to it. The former Chief Justice (Justice Loughery), who wrote a book on WV political corruption, is charged with a variety of federal criminal offenses. He was elected as a Republican Another justice retired in July and is pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud, elected as a Democrat. Another justice retired yesterday to allow her seat and the July retiree's seat to be contested in the November election. She had been elected as a Democrat. Trick is that candidates had to file by midnight yesterday.
We elect our judiciary at every level here--magistrates, circuit court judges, family judges, and the Supreme Court. We changed the rules to make judge elections non-partisan last year and the newest of the impeached judges was elected this way, although nominally a Republican.
When the trials finish for the three remaining justices (Loughery, Workman and Walker), the Governor will be able to appoint their successors if there are convictions. Gov. Justice (yes, that is his name) is a bloated billionaire elected as a Democrat who converted back to being a Republican after a Trump visit last year. They would serve till 2020.
Loughery deserves impeachment. Main complaints against the rest are rather costly re-dos of their offices. Loughery had an inlaid wood map of the state put in his office with the counties in different woods, except his home county of Tucker which was granite. The justices held that they are a separate branch of government, using accumulated surpluses on this work.
The optics are very bad. We are the leading edge of the opioid epidemic and these funds could have expanded drug courts or other efforts.
Going to be fun to watch.

This is inside baseball for WV politics, but still understandable to others.
