New Zealand Seal slaps man with octopus in NZ

Kayakers off Kaikoura in New Zealand were trying to capture the sunbathing seals looking "cute", but nothing was standing in the way of this animal's lunch.

Biologist nitpick - that appears to be a sea lion, not a seal.

I don't think you have that right. It's a fur seal, which looks a lot like a sea lion, they share a family, iirc.

Fur seals are a subfamily of sea lion.

They are a subfamily of Otariidae which includes eared seals (which includes fur seals) and sea lions.

Do you think he was harassing the octopus or the kayaker?

Sorry, Thwacky, we've been doing it wrong this whole time. You're supposed to use an octopus, not a fish.

Frying Pan Why Did An Octopus-Wielding Sea Lion Slap A Kayaker In The Face?

"Why Did An Octopus-Wielding Sea Lion Slap A Kayaker In The Face?" NPR 28 September 2018

Quote:
[Principal investigator and associate research scientist at the University of California, Santa Cruz's Institute of Marine Sciences, Colleen] Reichmuth says the video could portray typical sea lion foraging. "The behavior in that video is pretty normal behavior for a sea lion that is feeding on prey that is too big to swallow whole," Reichmuth says.

Sea lions don't have grinding teeth, so while they can hold onto a slippery fish or octopus, they can't chew it well. Instead, they bring the prey to the surface and smash it on the water to break it into bite-size pieces, she says.
