Default NTSB releases preliminary report on deadly helicopter crash in New York's East River

The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report Monday on a deadly helicopter crash earlier this month in New York City's East River. While a full report on what went wrong could be a year away or more, the preliminary report includes an interview with the pilot -- offering, for the first time, details of the events that led up to the March 11 crash in the pilot's words, CBS New York reports.

It appears that, in addition to their four-point seat belts, the passengers were also wearing fall-protection harnesses with lanyards secured to the helicopter. As I read that news report, the latter were used for photo ops with the door open. The body harnesses seem to have been secured to the lanyards with screw-gate carabiners.

The scenario that situation suggests is being upside down in cold water trying to release both an unfamiliar seat harness (probably a standard quarter-turn rig, but still...) and also an unfamiliar carabiner. Somebody with experience scuba diving, rock climbing, and car racing would have aced it, but it would likely trap most others.

The screw gate carbine alone would be enough to seal most people's fate. The pilot said he couldn't manage to release the one from the passenger next to him and he would be your experienced professional.
