damian didn't say they could drink it without any ill effects, just that it could be drunk. Technically, you can drink mercury, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I myself think it was mostly a jest saying how Australia is so much better that their floodwaters are perfectly safe to drink. Maybe by the time you get to be an adult you've been attacked by so many venoumous things that a bit of benzine and cyanide in the flood water gives it a nice flavour. Or maybe they just drink the floodwater to get the taste of Australian beer out of their mouths.
