Computer Library Of Congress Will No Longer Archive Every Tweet

Since 2010, Library of Congress has been archiving every single public tweet: Yours, ours, the president's.

But today, the institution announced it will no longer archive every one of our status updates, opinion threads, and "big if true"s. As of Jan. 1, the library will only acquire tweets "on a very selective basis."

I imagine it's difficult keeping up with all of Trump's tweets.

But I think it is very important that we archive ever lie, assault on our freedoms and institutions, and ignorant utterance, as a warning to future generations.

I would expect that the tweets of the (gag) President will be among those kept.

I wish we could get the president banned from Twitter. I donít want nuclear war to come about, thanks to something Trump tweeted while on the toilet. If we are to be vaporized in nuclear hellfire, letís have it come about with some dignity.

There are a lot of words that we should be able to associate with a president and cannot with Trump. Dignity definitely being one of them.

I had no idea the Library of Congress was archiving tweets in the first place, but now that I know they're planning to cut back, I feel an inexplicable sense of loss.

I joined Twitter just after I learned they archived every tweet. That is why I originally only posted weather updates.

However, I have grown beyond that. Twitter is my favourite social media platform. And, knowing that my Tweets from the Great White North are no longer of interest to Big Brother Nation to the South makes me feel a little less important.

I just realised my Twitter was hooked up to my Pinterest account; I regularly scour Pinterest for ideas about organizing my home. My friend sent me a text saying "I am tired of you tweeting about bathroom organization" and I said "WTF?" but apparently every time I pin something I tweet about it.

So all my stored tweets are about organizing your house.

A friend of mine filed a complaint with Twitter regarding his "I've got a bigger button" tweet, noting that Twitter does not allow threats of violence.

Not holding my breath.

Following the links in the original story leads to:

Quote:
In April, 2010, the Library of Congress and Twitter signed an agreement providing the Library the public tweet text from the companyís inception through the date of the agreement, an archive of tweets from 2006 through April 2010. Additionally, Twitter agreed to provide tweets on an ongoing basis under the same terms.

I don't have access to the article right now, but IIRC, Twitter has been getting around this by claiming that another part of the criteria for deleting a post and/or banning a user is because the Tweet was "noteworthy and/or newsworthy."

Twitter said a while ago it was "reviewing it's policies."

Which I've always interpreted to mean, "Nobody at Twitter has the balls to enact its own TOS when the 'person of interest' is the president."

Regarding President Trump... I heard an analyst on CNN yesterday that had an interesting reason to keep the President on Twitter. He said that with every over the top tweet coming from Trump's account, he loses more and more relevance on Twitter. The President's voice on Twitter becomes a point of derision, and is disregarded as actionable. Given how many Tweets have been issued that the White House, Administration, House/Senate or even DJT himself have walked back on, I can see that happening.

Icon13 Twitter explains why it won't ban Trump over controversial tweets

Twitter Inc. said Friday it will not block world leaders from its social media platform because they play a critical role in global and public conversations. The statement comes after some Twitter users have called on the company to ban President Trump for tweets that they say encourage violence, even stoking fears of a nuclear war between the U.S. and North Korea.

Terrorist organisations and mass murderers also play a critical role in political and public communications (and they're certainly newsworthy) but that doesn't mean their threats get a free platform on Twitter.

I'm not saying Trump is a terrorist or murderer, but I just don't think he should be pardoned from Twitter rules for that reason when, according to that explanation, other types of banned threatening speech should be allowed too.
