Ponder Regular SAUNAS could save your life

A sauna does more than build up a sweat - it can be a life saver, say researchers.

Middle-aged men who take frequent saunas are around half as likely to die from heart conditions as those who do not, according to a new study.

Regular sessions also appear to protect against early deaths from any cause, lowering the risk by 40 per cent for those having a once-daily sauna.

Correlation, not causation, but still interesting. I have long thought that sodium-sensitive people would likely be helped by sweating off excess sodium in saunas or steam rooms (or otherwise inducing themselves to sweat copiously). But this seems to find benefits to health beyond what would come from sodium sensitivity. For most people this would be a safe and fun way to improve health prospects. I would certainly be going with it if I had access to a facility.

A good sauna is something that I'd love to have, but there's no way I could reasonably fit one into my current home without taking away space from something more practical. Maybe some day I'll upgrade to a place where it makes sense, but I'm not holding my breath for that. If I have to drive someplace to go sweat with half-dressed strangers, it's never going to happen. I never used them even when I was going to the gym. Now that I have a home gym it's off the table. I think I sweat enough from exercise to help regulate sodium, but if a sauna were more convenient to use it would be relaxing.

ETA: Then again, it might be worth looking into whether those mini sauna/shower things are any good. Not as nice as a real sauna room, but possibly better than nothing. My third bathroom is mostly used as a half bath for guests. It has an old tub/shower combo that doesn't get much use, and when it does only the shower part. I was planning on replacing it with a walk-in shower when I renovate. But if it was a halfway decent sauna, then suddenly it would become useful. Even if it was less convenient as a shower, it wouldn't matter since it's only used that way infrequently.

hmmm I have this vague memory that people with heart conditions aren't supposed to use saunas? Could be why frequent users don't tend to die from heart conditions?

Found this link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2359619/ which seems like it might be good for some heart problems but not others.
