Good on him for doing so. Luckily there weren't two people in need of rescue:

There was a sheet of ice that was very fragile that immediately started creaking as I walked out on to it. And then, when I walked out onto the edge, I just fell through it
The best way to deal with thin ice like that is to lie down on the ice in an X shape to minimize pressure at any one point.

Yes, GenYus, I was kind of surprised that with all that emphasis on how much he knew what he was doing there wasn't any mention of that.

It's possible that he knew about lying down on the ice but stood up because he could tell that in order to get to the woman in the water he'd have to go out into the water himself, and he knew that creek well enough to know that the water wasn't deep enough to get all of him wet [ETA if he was standing upright]; but was afraid that if he was lying down on the ice that it would drop him in anyway and he'd get wet all over. But if so I think the article should have gone into that, rather than leaving people with the impression that going out standing upright onto ice that someone may have just fallen through is a good idea.
