United States Mitt Romney for president in 2016?

Far from being excommunicated by Republicans after his loss to President Obama, 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is enjoying a brand resurgence of late, drawing several potential 2016 candidates to his "ideas summit" in Utah and even earning some 2016 speculation himself.

After what he said at that fundraiser about the "47 percent"? That man will never be President, and he is delusional to think he will. That speech was his Chappaquiddick.

I don't think the way things are going it matters too much who they run. Republicans are still doubling down on this Tea Party nonsense, and whoever wins the primary is going to have to pander to the far right wing of their party to do it. But that's not going to please anyone but the people who were already guaranteed to vote Republican anyway. It's a losing strategy in the general election, and with demographics trends working against them, it's always going to be a losing strategy. 2016 is the Democratic Party's to lose.

Democrats are going to have a rough midterm in 2014, but there's going to be at least one Democrat with veto power blocking them indefinitely. Their gains this year will only embolden far right voters and ensure that the grownups don't fix anything in the Republican party between now and 2016. The surprise victory of the anti-immigration tea party candidate over the house majority leader also ensures that establishment Republicans won't be able to reign in xenophobic Tea Party tendencies after this election, ensuring that those demographic trends are even worse for Republicans. If they can manage to alienate Hispanic voters enough, then some of those border states may not be so solidly red at some point.

Soapbox The Case for Mitt Romney in 2016

Will Romney be different from other failed nominees? Could he defy the odds and make a comeback presidential bid capturing the GOP nomination after all the doubt, second-guessing and blame that accompany such a loss? According to the latest Quinnipiac poll, many Americans seem to think so 45 percent of voters said the United States would be better off today with Romney as president.

Correction: Richard Nixon was not the only candidate to be nominated again after losing a presidential election, as an earlier version of this article stated.
The "corrected" version is still wrong. They forgot Thomas Dewey.

Besides that...

3. All failed nominees other than Romney were career politicians.
Romney has run for president twice, and once each for governor and Senate. The only way you could argue he's "not a career politician" is that he lost all but one of those elections. Which doesn't exactly recommend him for getting the nomination again.
