Default Intersex athletics: Should Caster Semenya Be Allowed to Compete Against Women?

Should Caster Semenya Be Allowed to Compete Against Women?

There’s a “ticking time bomb” in Olympic sports: a new rule in place for the Rio de Janeiro Games—or rather, the recent suspension of an old rule—has opened up the field to female-identified athletes with intersex conditions. It now seems possible that multiple medals will be won, and maybe even world records set, by a group of women who until recently would have been excluded from competition or forced into treatment to suppress their levels of testosterone. If these women win gold, a set of issues that have clouded the Olympic Games for more than 50 years will gather into a storm.
Fascinating, objective and well-written article.

crescent's one-cent summary: Men and women are different and intersex people exist. There are multiple kinds of intersex conditions with multiple causes. Some but not all intersex conditions can allow for greater athletic performance than non-intersex women. It is not all completely understood, and there are complex ethical issues as well. It is complicated. In the world of very-high level athletic competition, it matters.

The way things are going it's a matter of time before a transgender athlete tries to compete in women's competition. So I suppose it's good to get the question out of the way now.
