Default Gunman takes hostages, displays Islamic flag in Sydney Australia

Quote:
Hostages are being forced to hold an Islamic flag against the window of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Martin Place after at least one gunman stormed the premises.

An unknown number of staff and customers are being held at gunpoint inside the cafe. It was earlier reported that 20 hostages were being held.

The cafe is in one of the busiest business districts in the busiest city in Australia so this is causing quite a but of turmoil

D'oh!

ABC News (that is the American TV channel) reported that it was in "Sydney, Australia's capital city."

That's silly. Everybody knows that Vienna is the capitol of Australia.

More seriously, this is bad. I hope it turns out well. Some of the news reports are indicating that this was preceded by some sort of anti-terror operation. If that is true, one can hope that the hostage takers were operating out of desperation and without much planning. Then again, news reports at this stage are likely to be full of rumors and inaccuracies.

Three hostages just ran out of a fire door.

Reports say there may be a maximum of 50 hostages.

The Daily Telegraph has taken its usual measured view on the story, as one can expect from a quality Murdoch paper.

I don't usually work Mondays but changed this week it being my last week. Also when at work I usually spend my days at work in front of the tv, but didn't today. As a result I only heard about it when I got home today about 4:45pm. This is not something we expect in Australia.

Well it would love to be.

If you haven't already done so, take a look at the #illridewithyou hashtag on Twitter (before the trolls get to it).

Default Sydney siege ends as commandos storm Lindt Cafe and hostages run out

It's over. http://www.theguardian.com/australia...stages-run-out.

Quote:
An armed siege at a cafe in the heart of Sydney has ended after commandos entered the building shortly after a series of loud bangs were heard and groups of hostages ran out onto the street.

In dramatic scenes about 17 hours after a single armed man, named in reports as Man Haron Monis, first took an unknown number of hostages, army commandos with assault rifles and wearing body armour stormed the Lindt Cafe, in a building on Martin Place, a pedestrianised street in the middle of Sydney’s central business district.

He was out on bail in relation to the murder of his ex-wife, and had more than 50 allegations of sexual assault against him. It sounds like he had nothing to lose.

Every time I see a video of a victim running into a police officer's arms, it makes me teary. Maybe it's a symptom of living in an armed population, but I half expected those hostages to be pushed to the ground, patted down, and questioned. What if they'd been rigged by the terrorist?

At any rate, those instant hugs were heart warming.
