Default 3 Cities With Freeways Going Nowhere

Once thought to be symbols of prosperity, innercity highways are now just eyesores — and sources of civic dysfunction — to some new urbanists.

"Three cities that are trying to copycat what Portland, Oregon did on the east side of the Willamette back in the 80s..."

A better title to this article would have been "3 Freeways cities are Thinking About Removing".

When I originally moved to Seattle in the early 1980s, there were numerous overpasses to nowhere. They'd built the overpasses first, and then, when the freeways were never connected, left them there.

In the late 80s, they went back and either connected things up or torn down most of the overpasses. The last ones, on SR520, are scheduled to be removed as part of the replacement of the Evergreen Point Bridge.

On the Googlemaps provided, I don't know which roads are empty. They are still marked as roads on the map.

Unlike the photo from South Africa. That is just the setup for Speed 4.

Actually, with rare exceptions, ALL freeways go nowhere. They just sit there. In fact it is kind of scary when they go someplace.

And I expected Waukeegan, IL's Amstutz Expressway to be in there.

From Wikipedia,
The Amstutz Expressway is a short, limited-access road located in downtown Waukegan. It was built in the 1970s to ease traffic in Waukegan’s downtown area, but is now also known as the "road to nowhere".[3] The 2.9-mile (4.7 km), four-lane highway was intended to be a connecting route for the downtown area, but a critical link through the neighboring village of North Chicago was never built, and the factories that the expressway was designed to serve have since closed. Today, the thoroughfare carries fewer than 15,000 vehicles per day.[4] Because it is used so little, this short stretch of highway has been the setting for filming such movies as Groundhog Day, The Blues Brothers,[5] The Ice Harvest, Batman Begins,[6] and Chicago Fire.[7]

Glasgow's 'Bridge to Nowhere' finally completed

One of the project's backers, the sustainable transport charity Sustrans, hopes the crossing will now be known as the 'Bridge to Everywhere'.

ETA the Daily Mash's take on it: Co,pleted bridge to nowhere just goes to other part of Glasgow

Locals had urged officials to complete the bridge using a wormhole in space-time that would transport bold adventurers to somewhere with less knife crime.
