Default New Jersey family faces thousands in fines for Christmas light spectacle

A New Jersey family is in a holiday battle with officials over an extravagant Christmas display that attracts hundreds of tourists. Every December for the past 15 years, the Apruzzis have decorated their house with tens of thousands of dazzling lights.

I am very glad that the Apruzzis don't live next door to me.

I'm sure he could have found somewhere in the city that wasn't his home, a park, for example, to set up such a large display. Especially if it was a fundraiser for a charity. Insisting that he has to decorate his house like that comes across as showing off.

"If they shut me down, they're going to have to talk to my attorney," he responded. "This is my First Amendment right."

"Free speech?"

"Free speech and free religion," Apruzzi said.
If I were his neighbor, I'd have a loudspeaker system blaring Islamic prayers 24/7 at Apruzzi's house.

I understand the traffic concerns, but I'd like to know why this is only a problem now. The piece said that he's been doing this for several years. No doubt that reality show Christmas Light Wars. Seems to me the show should foot the man's legal bills.
I think claiming freedom of religion is stretching it--I consider Christmas lights pretty secular.

It might be that there was a sudden spike in traffic or some other issue this year, or that the neighborhood has made complaints against him before but this is the the first time the city's actually doing something.

What doesn't the city start writing tickets to the people who are parking illegally and otherwise blocking traffic?

Why don't they station a meter-cop prominently near, so that people don't stop/park in the first place?

And Dawn, there's nothing in the article that would make me believe this is suddenly a problem. It sounds as if it's been building for a while, and it's just this year that the pressure from the [sarcasm]people who are making war on Christmas[/sarcasm] became too much for the mayor to withstand.

Is the issue that people are parking illegally or that the cars are veeeeeeeery slowly driving down the street? When I've been to homes with massive displays, the car traffic moves very slowly, partially because they are looking at the lights and partially because the foot traffic spills over into the street.
