I'm reminded of the minefield in Finding Nemo.

S'mai bawb:

The Associated Press says that the Navy inspected the moored mine and it showed decades of marine growth.
So, someone didn't finish cleaning up their minefield a couple of decades ago. It's odd that no one noticed the mine before now.

Oddly enough, no one will admit ownership of it.

If it were below the surface until now (since it was a moored mine), I can understand why it wasn't noticed.

"Pugent Sound"? I know Olympia used to have a lot of paper mills but still ... (apparently it was an error made by CBS News)

Mystery mine: U.S. Navy says origin of device exploded in Puget Sound still unknown.

I just noticed this morning the typo in the subject line. There is no N in Puget, Psihala.

And to BoKu. You should look at the post Astronaut Kjell Lindgren put on Twitter this morning.

I don't write the topic titles of news stories. I copy/paste them directly from the stories where they're posted.

CBS News must've corrected it since I posted it, as it is correct now on the site.

Ponder

I heard a news report yesterday that indicated it might have been a training mine (a dud) that got away or was missed after the exercise, probably from the 1970's when they were apparently doing practice de-mining runs in the Sound. It wasn't new (there were barnacles growing on it), nor did it appear to be WW2 vintage, so that would make sense. But this wasn't an official report.

At least they didn't call it Pungent Sound.

My flatland relatives pronounce it Pudge-it Sound. Somehow I never imagined reading an article about people sheltering in place on the Kitsap Peninsula.

And for Psihala:

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story had a misspelling in the headline, photo caption and article text that has since been updated.
Oddly enough it was correct in the link itself, otherwise the original link would not work any more.

Today's article says it was an inert mine from a 2005 training exercise, and that there are apparently other mines from the same exercise still out there. They promised to go look for them.
