It's a hundred years since the First World War, but bombs are still being found. And to make it worse, they often contain poison gas. There's something like a 30 year backlog of ordnance to be disposed of as it takes so long to process each one.

See, I didn't know that part.

The book I read about the bombing of Hamburg is listed in the "Further Reading" section of the Wiki article you linked to earlier:

Lowe, Keith (2007). Inferno: The Devastation of Hamburg, 1943. Viking. ISBN 0-670-91557-2.

The Rathaus in Hannover has four models of the city in the lobby: One from the medieval era, just the old walled city. One from 1939, nice old city with walled part still clearly visible. Next in 1945 - burned out ruins. Finally newer one, somewhere around the 1990's or 2000's. It is an interesting way to show the damage and reconstruction.

A few minutes ago, I was informed that due to the defusing of a WWII bomb, train service in the area where my office building is will be shut down in 20 minutes. The head of department is asking all employees to leave work before that.

Those who don't are asked to stay away from windows for savety reasons.

I'm working from home today, so I'm far away from the action.

They did it again: Here's a picture of the bomb after defusing!

The 450 kg bomb forced 400 people from their flats during the defusing process.

Another 1000 kg US bomb was found in another part of Hamburg and will be defused today. Evacuation is in progress.

Who's 'our'? You in the RAF now, GenYus? (Ah, US bombs. Never mind!)

The bombs have been in German soil so long, that they've acclimatized and gone native. That's why if you refer to them by their imperial weight, they'll get upset and blow up. Please just humour them and call them metric bombs!..

I doubt that the bombs could become native as they are members of a group that clearly supported* the overthrow of the government through force or violence.

* Or does their refusal to explode sufficiently demonstrate that they are conscientious objectors?

They're clearly terrorist immigrants. It's obvious they don't want to work.

Default Royal Navy Removes WWII Bomb From River Thames in London

Britain's Royal Navy on Friday removed and detonated a still-dangerous World War II bomb whose discovery in the River Thames shut down a chunk of central London.

Maybe it would be a good idea if we'd stop dropping bombs on one another...

Was that necessary?

We were discussing the problems up thread, that are created by modern air warfare in other countries. Countries that likely won't have the economically and technical resources to deal with the problem that both Germany and the UK have.

Yes, even if I didn't say it quite as cynical as GenYus, I think we should stop dropping bombs on people in the Middle and Far East, too.

The bombings do seem unnecessary on many occasions.

Default 50,000 evacuated in German city after 5 WWII bombs uncovered

German authorities are evacuating around 50,000 people from their homes in the northern city of Hannover while five suspected aerial bombs from World War II are made safe for removal.

I was wondering - are there evacuations of that magnitude in London and other cities bombed by Germany, too?

ETA: I just checked - as of half an hour ago, all bombs have been defused, the evacuation order has been lifted, everybody is save in Hannover.

Yes, as the link from Psihala post 30 shows. Here's another one from later this year:
