Regarding punishments, Adam Savage has some advice in this interview with FamilyTech:

Quote:
The most regular restriction weíve had throughout my kids lives has been that they have to turn in their cell phones every night. This has not always gone as planned. They learned they could sneak upstairs and get their phones back after Iím asleep. Theyíve learned that Iím much less likely to check if we have company over. One son even handed me a dummy phone every night for several weeks until he was caught. I had a difficult time with that. I had a grudging admiration for how ballsy he was, at the same time as I needed to come up with a real restriction, a natural consequence for his actions. I made him use a flip phone for about six months. He HATED it. It was awesome. I remember somewhere in the middle of that he complained that the punishment sucked, and I told him thatís how I knew it was working!

I work many hoidays and not to support people on holiday. It's just for the convenience of a particular calendar. In fact, it means many others who would have a holiday don't get one either. It doesn't bother me because I've worked on holidays my whole life, for so many reasons — working for people on holiday, meeting a deadline, making ends meet, the boss said I had to, learning a new job, etc... It was never anything to me; It's just another day. Hearing the arguments on this board has at least made me more sensitive to the fact that having to work on holidays is way more than just an inconvenience for many people, which (as ignorant or insensitive as it may sound) I did not know.

All of a sudden (the last month or so), my Facebook feed seems to be filled with astrology-based memes. People I would never have expected it of are posting nonsense about "traits of Taureans" and which zodiac signs constitute their "squad." I thought this stuff pretty much died out along with disco and little gold spoons dangling in chest hairs.

Without two of them affecting our lives, I'm pretty sure it would be curtains for all of us in a matter of seconds - the closest planet and the closest star that is.

The more I think about it, there are a ton of these memes that are just boring or stupid.

"If your Dad is / was a hard working man..."

"Share if you love your son / daughter / nephews / nieces..."
Hooray for you! You love your family.

"If you can't handle me at my worst then you don't deserve me at my best"
I heard a good routine by comedian Dwayne Perkins based on this one.

"Ladies if your boyfriend can't (insert some sort of 'manly' task) then you have a girlfriend."

There is one that says something like "Men with quick tempers are the most passionate ...something something".
So emotional immaturity is a good thing in disguise?

These aren't exactly memes but they're in a similar vein to many of them - the quizzes you take that show "you were taught by Nuns if you get all these right" or "you watched TV when it was good if you get all these right" kinds of things. The kind of smug "the world was better when we were young" attitude. Which is bad enough (although with Trump in the White House maybe not as untrue as it used to be!) but jeeze louise most of the time these damn quizzes are wrong. I've deliberately gotten answers wrong and I still get 100%. So don't gloat too fast those of you dazzled by your success at these FB quizzes .

Maybe someone needs to do a "Share if you like clogging your friends' pages with useless, boring crap."

Just remembered another one. The elderly couple embracing each other with the caption, "In our day we fixed things that were broken; we didn't throw them away".

I can't even start on how deluded this one is.

It doesn't sound like a terribly unreasonable or excessive punishment, but I do take exception to the glee he seems to derive from it. Punishing your child is a necessary, but unpleasant part of being a parent. It definitely shouldn't be something you enjoy doing. That's twisted.

If it were my friends doing it, I could handle it. But I get most of these as "recommended posts" or through some other Facebook suggestion.

It is their algorithm that has me.

Though to be fair, a rich plutocrat would likely live through Trump, just as they did Obama.

I would be quite happy if all my pessimism is proven wrong that it turns out that electing a racist con man with numerous bankruptcies, winds up being the greatest thing to happen to this country. But until I am proven wrong, I'm keeping my eyes and ears out and am treating every word he says as a poisonous promise.

Which is ironic, because it seems like football fans are more likely to riot when their team wins.

Any meme about how kids to day are spoilt and our childhoods were superior.

Firstly I do not believe kids today are spoilt, it is just parents doing the best for their children, and even if they are spoilt, it would be our fault, we would be doing the spoiling.

Had the Internet and memes been around when I was growing up I can only imagine how many "kids today are spoiled entitled brats" memes would have been going the rounds. I can't speak personally, of course, for earlier generations but being a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s pretty much guaranteed that you were considered coddled at best and at worst, a whole lot worse .

Well, it's only other parents' kids that are spoiled, of course. The poster of such memes has children who are absolute angels and are completely obedient to their strict rules.

Or, for that matter, a kid in the 50's and a teen in the 60's.

I strongly suspect that other decades could be filled in there also.
