Comment: Meaning behind 10, 2 & 4 on the Dr. Pepper sign. I remember as a
child it was "Dr. Pepper break time is 10, 2 & 4". I was told recently that the slogan came out in the 1920's when a survey was done showing your sugar level was low at 10:30, 2:30, & 4:30 and you were to drink the sugar drink at 10, 2 & 4 so you would not get tired. I say that was a marketing ploy done in the 1920's, not an "offical survery" since they were not that health conscious at that time period. |

I agree it is unlikely there was actual measurements of sugar level, but people have noticed that their energy level flags at regular times each day. Of course, the Dr. Pepper would not have been just a source of sugar, but also caffeine, which was known to be an energy-booster. I remember the 10-2-4 claims in the 60s, I think in ads, but I am pretty sure it just referred to energy dipping, not specifically blood sugar.

The "10, 2, and 4" study had other repercussions. When I worked retail back in the early 1970s, the Muzak in the store always started to perk up at 10, 2, and 4 with more lively, bouncy music to try to get customers and staff to wake up.

kind of an off topic question but --- If Dr. Pepper isn't Cherry flavor (as there is now Cherry Flavor Dr. Pepper) what flavor is it?

It is a blend. People used to say the predominant flavor and ingredient was prune juice. But of course, nearly all references to prune juice are jokes.

It has 23 flavors according to the advertisements. Based on how much it foams compared to other sodas, licorice is definitely one of the flavors.

Actually, it tastes like serviceberries (aka shadberries)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelanchier Or, rather, serviceberries that are slightly sweetened.
My grandmother used to make sarvisberry jam, and it tasted EXACTLY like Dr. Pepper! |

On the various Dr Pepper tours I have been on (the stuff was invented in Waco and the the former oldest bottling plant is in Dublin, TX), they have said that the dominant flavor was black cherry. Cherry Dr is DP with an extra shot of cherry flavoring. |

BTW, HOT Dr. Pepper is quite nice on a very cold day. But do not put a closed can or bottle on a stove, even if in a pan of water (BT/DT)
