Well for one thing, cancer is God's favorite thing to cure. He's not so hot with the amputated limbs, though. So it's probably about protecting his turf.

And it's not like your friends would be sitting around saying "gee, I wish Photo Bob's mother hadn't aborted him."

ETA: My response is "what if she'd had a miscarriage, as she did with two other pregnancies?"

Yeah, that's basically my response, too (I have an older sister who was stillborn and naturally isn't very important to me). It's a purely emotional argument and I tend to ignore those.

What's with calling her a "wife" throughout the whole thing? That's her identity - that of a "wife"? Not a woman, not even a mother (I dislike it when women have their identity reduced down to motherhood as well, but at least here it would be somewhat relevant). It's "wife".

Not really important compared to the tired old "that aborted fetus could cure cancer one day you know" argument, but still annoying to me, at least.

It's easy to counter that argument anyway... the fetus could grow up to be a serial killer too.

I have worked in medical research. It is not like there is a Pasteur or whomever. It is a collective effort. That new cure that comes on the market may have dozens or even hundreds of scientist working collectively. Even if there is one world changing idea that some future Newton-like person comes up with, I firmly believe that someone else will come up with it. They just got there first.

To make it clear she's not an unmarried pregnant woman, you know, a slut.

Well given that they were both Jewish, they probably would have been to a certain extent.

I do believe you've completely missed my point.
