I can't find an accurate count of WWII veterans but I know they are dying at a very fast rate.
Well I consider 3-4 to be a few, so 35 is quite a few in my book. I was amazed that there were ANY surviving WWI veterans, nevermind 35.

When you mentioned this & I researched it, I was surprised, but not surprised at the number left.
If you really want your mind blown, IIRC, at least a few years ago (like post-2000) there was the parent of a WWI veteran still alive (He/she was recieving survivor benefits). I'd love to know the story behind that!

Was it in the same vein as the recently-dead "last Civil War widow"? i.e. a much younger spouse of a parent?

That's what I've always thought. Some soldier who was the oldest in his family, his dad married a woman who was his age or a bit younger.

I wish I could find the list. My google skills are not working too well right now.

Blow Your Top Woman Applying for New ID Says She's 120

Mariam Amash filled in the routine form with anything but routine information. Amash, who recently applied for a new Israeli identity card, said she was born 120 years ago - a claim, if confirmed, that would make her the oldest person in the world.

Yow! Oldest known person turns 115

Maybe it was a lifetime of chores on the family farm that accounts for Edna Parker's long life. Or maybe just good genes explain why the world's oldest known person will turn 115 on April 20, defying staggering odds.

Hi, I'm new here. I do physical therapy in home care, I recently had the great honor of meeting a lady who is 105 and in very good health, and very alert. She lives in the same house she has owned since 1917. It was very odd to walk thru her house and see antiques that you know where purchased by her when they were new.

If you ever get the chance to meet and talk to someone 100 yrs old, jump on it, you won't be sorry. Especially if they have their wits about them.

United Kingdom Oldest WWI veteran dies aged 113

Henry Allingham has now died.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8157128.stm

Scroll down the report for a short video about his life.

He was the oldest survivor of World War One and fought at the Battle of Jutland. He joined the Royal Naval Air service in 1915 and flew as an air gunner at the Battle of Ypres. Later he was transferred to the Royal Air Force, his death meaning that none of its original members is now alive.

RIP Henry. Thanks for all you did.

(There are now only two British veterans of World War I alive, Harry Patch - who fought in the trenches - and Claude Choules who fought at the Battle of Jutland with Henry. Claude now lives in Australia.)
