The ants probably survived.

How is this "trying to exterminate" ants, and not "using a match to burn an ant"?

I'm not aware of any extermination method like that, but I have heard of people trying to burn individual ants as a sort of exercise in cruelty/for their own amusement.

Note: I have no problem with killing ants, but using matches to burn them individually raises many concerns for me.

As part of my preparation for my radio show, I surf the internet for stories of stupidity. This is far from a one off event. People have burned down their homes, their neighbours homes, barns and so forth all while trying to eliminate pests. They have used fire on ants, spiders, moles, and much more.

My grandfather once accidentally shot himself in the foot trying to kill a mole.

I have used a little gasoline poured into an ant bed in the yard and lit it.

Usually gets all the ants.

That would be an extermination method. I've also heard of people burning down their houses by using an improvised flamethrower of aerosol can and lighter to try to exterminate insects. The wisdom of the method may be doubtful, but I have no problem with it being described as an attempt to exterminate.

In the OP article, though, it sounded a lot more like he was applying lit matches to individual ants. That is not just an extermination effort in my view. That's basically someone playing with matches to inflict pain. (I can't be sure because it is a bit vague, but that's what it sounded like to me. Depending on the size and type of the ant and where it is located, burning them individually may be harder than most other methods of killing them, including squishing.)

I don't know. I guess I just got a sort of icky cruelty vibe from it, rather than a stupidity vibe.

To be clear, something the article very much is not, it is hard to tell what exactly he was doing. You could even interpret the description in the article as saying that he set an ant on fire, and it then ran into combustible materials which caused the house fire. Which would almost be amusing if it hadn't involved burning his parents' house down and killing 3 pets.

For ants, I use boiling water or soapy water.

Less risk of burning down whatever building I'm near.

My grandparents had a big ant colony (about 10 feet long) on their farm when I was young. They said they burnt wood and tyres on it for days to kill it, but it was back soon after.
