I clicked the link. Was somewhat disappointed that the writer didn't manage to slip in a reference to a popular fan theory that Aladdin is actually set in a post-apocalyptic universe. Some great disaster happened and after centuries of rebuilding, they've managed to make it to the tech level seen in the movie. Genie, by virtue of being a magical being, is one of the few who remember a time before the apocalypse. So all those anachronistic references to modern culture, aren't really anachronistic.

IS have already destroyed Palmyra, as well as other similar sites in Iraq, so whether or not similar idiots support blowing up these places in ignorance is irrelevant, really. The people that "we" are trying to blow up are already blowing them up deliberately.

It doesn't really matter what we use as Genie can just magic it away as this documentary shows.

Donald Trump Spokeswoman Asks: Why Have Nukes If You’re ‘Afraid To Use Them’?

Default AP-NORC Poll: Christian-Muslim split on religious freedom

Americans place a higher priority on preserving the religious freedom of Christians than for other faith groups, ranking Muslims as the least deserving of the protections, according to a new survey.

From the story Wanderwoman just linked:

Quote:
"Religious freedom is now in the eye of the beholder," Haynes said. "People in different traditions, with different ideological commitments, define religious freedom differently."
I think you could remove the "now" from that. I strongly suspect it's been true all along.

This, just like immigration, has been a continuing argument all through the history of the United States and the preceding colonies. The particular groups being snarled at vary; but, while we've always had some people who genuinely believed in it, there hasn't been some Golden Age of religious freedom during which everyone agreed that of course it applied to every religion on the planet plus agnosticism and atheism.

It's one of multiple battles that keep needing to be fought -- and it does need to keep being fought, even if the best result available is to keep it at least for the most part a rhetorical rather than a physical battle.
