97 is a good, high number for an age. RIP Ms. Channing.

I liked the Mental Floss write-up about her from a few years ago. It said she performed Hello Dolly 5,000 times, and that Johnny Depp said he wanted to play her in a biopic.

She was a great talent and always projected joy in her performances.i never saw her live on stage, but my college roommate and his wife, both in the theatre, lived in the same NYC apartment house as she and her husband. I remember being floored when Mike told me one day that she had baby-sat for them and had taught their four-year-old daughter to belt out a song. She sounded like a down to earth woman. RIP.

Unsurprised that Mark Evanier has a remembrance, including a time he was lucky enough to have a half-hour conversation with her in the green room of a TV talk show they were both appearing on:

Great lady. Great talker. I was so delighted to spend that time with her and find out for myself that she was just like that for real. I did not even want to spoil the moment by asking her about being in the movie, Skidoo!

My principal memories of her mostly come from seeing her as a perennial guest on various talk shows back in the seventies, when she was a mere girl of 55 or so. Somehow that makes me feel both young and old at the same time.
