One must also remember that mountains are not static. When continents crash, I strongly suspect that, for a (geologically) short time, normal maximums don't apply. Then, once the mountains has be thrust as high as they'll get, they'll bob down and up for a while before settling.

It all depends on when you measure. Do you measure at the maximum altitude, or do you measure when things are a bit more settled?

I've always assumed that it's the amplified random background noise, be it wind, traffic, waves, people or whatever.

There are many sanctuaries (stupas, wats and pagods) all over Asia, where relics from Buddha supposedly are kept. I guess it's hard to say which are genuine or not.
