Comment: Yesterday I received an e-mail about the "Invitation Virus". This e-mail
which has been circulating since July 27th; the sender says they checked
out Norton Anti-Virus and was also on your website and that the
information they found they now believe it to be true.

When I opened up your website and clicked the link #2
"Invitation Virus" and read the boxed contents; I could understand how
anyone might think it was for real; even though you have it in big words
STATUS: HOAX and an explanation of the hoax below the boxed content.

There's not enough emphasis that what the person is reading in the boxed
content is a hoax. I can understand how someone could be mis-reading the
boxed contents for being real. Most of these people who are visiting your
site are doing so because they are in high panic mode from getting such an
e-mail like mine; not just surfing the internet in a calm state of mind.

I think you have an awesome website and I like the way it looks; but I
would like to make a suggestion that may help people who visit your
website.

The left column where you have a list of "Hottest Urban Legends" you could
add "HOAX". (Also add HOAX for the 25 Legends).

Once you click a link to view the contents; you could add before the boxed
content that:

The following is an example of the type of Hoax that is in circulation.

Comment: I take exception to this article being labeled as "glurge".
http://www.snopes.com/glurge/abbey.asp

It is a lovely, heart-warming story that affirms love and kindness in our
increasingly horror-filled world.

Please keep your unpleasant cynicism to yourself, and re-categorize this
story to something kind.

It was listed as "true," that's hardly cynical.

It isn't as glurgy as glurge can be, though. I don't see the darker meaning (am I missing it?) and it lacks threats or any attempts to convert the lost.

But I'm sure there are other versions out there, spun just so.

Comment: I'm a school librarian and I have used Snopes.com for years to
debunk urban legends. I've always considered this site to be my number
one choice for locating hoax information. Now you have been blocked by my
school district's IS department, primarily because of the "risque"
section. I'm sorry that you felt the need to sensationalize sexual
activity on your website. I notice that most of the items are either
false or undetermined, which tells me that you just want to tell a funny
or ironic story - at the cost of your credibility in other areas.

Do you get enough hits in this section to make it worthwhile? If not, you
might consider going back to being a credible hoaxbuster site.

Dear snopes:

If it involves a penis or a vagina, or, alternatively, buttocks or breasts (breasts only on a female), that means it is not a hoax. Please update your dictionaries accordingly. I am a librarian. That means I know more about books and words that go into books than you do.

Comment: I generally appreciate your web site. It is with great sadness, however,
that I read the following page. I was having fun reading about Christmas
mondegreens until I got to Hark!, where you quoted God's name, blatantly
used in vain. What a slap in the face to Christians!

http://www.snopes.com/holidays/chris...ondegreens.asp

Christmas is a time when many Christians choose to honor their king. What
a disgrace that you've included this vain reference. Please consider
omitting it from the page.

I do wonder how this is exactly vain, I've read it through and can find no reference to snopes in it at all. I also fail to see where the name is used 'in vain' as the closest line is "the new york king" and if jesus can be counted as king of the world does that mean new york has been excluded from that list for some reason?

Queen of the caramels got the "king" part wrong, but in the first verse:
Quote:
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the New York King.
Peace on earth and then he smiles;
Goddamn sinners reckon so.

Comment: I came to snopes.com looking for info about how virus is spread
thru mass-fwd'd emails. You offer no such info. Please add it to your
main menu or offer a link to it. Thank you. Please advise me where to go
to read about it. I am tired of getting emails that tell me to fwd them
to everyone I know. Isnt that how virus is spread? The perpetraitors of
these make the emails look like info everyone needs to read. How do we
know when it's chain mail, virus, or what to do about it? Please provide
an article about this subject.

Comment: I think your site is great, but people out there are misusing it. In the
email I got below, they're taking all the wrong stuff and sending it
around as if it's true. And, even worse, they're invoking the authority
of Snopes! They're saying, "It must be true -- it's on Snopes!"

To counteract this I would suggest you do one or more of the following:
(1) don't present the wrong information as text, but as an image file.
This will make just a bit harder to cut and paste the info which will
probably stop a lot of these people.
(2) Put a strike through all the text which is wrong.
(3) Put the word "WRONG!" after every wrong paragraph.

Hope you can do something about this.

Of course, that will also make it impossible for users to find correct information since the original e-mails won't be indexed by the search engine any more, but that's a small price to pay ...

I rather like suggestion number 3. That'll keep the website looking mature and respectable...to all 14 year old girls.

Comment: Why don't y'all get rid of the REPETITIVE info? While some stuff
is new, the majority of it has been on the site for literally ages! It's
annoying -- like the Nigerian scam, Amy Bruce, for example Like people
don't already know about that, etc?
