I caught the last half of that, but by that time it seemed to be clear it was a prank story. Oddly enough, though, there actually is a US Navy base in southern Indiana (Crane Surface Warfare Center).

I was only half-listening, because I was checking out a neighborhood I hope to move to, so I missed most of the obvious clues, and even the part about "oral history," so that quote was a great payoff.
