Default A single Peep took 27 hours to make in 1953

on the Just-Born web page, they list this little tidbit

In 1953, it took 27 hours to create one PEEPSŪ Marshmallow Chick. Today, thanks to advances in technology, it takes six minutes.

why would it take 27 hours to make a marshmallow in 1953? or are they talking abot the very first one took 27 hours to perfect?

Maybe there was drying time.

ETA: Maybe not. Looks like you can make your own in 4-6 hours at home.

From the same page--just a couple lines lower: "In the late 1950's PEEPSŪ wings were "clipped" to give them a sleek, modern look."

Maybe the reason it took so long to make the first Peeps could've been because the first ones looked more "chicken-y," complete with feathery wings, than the modern ones (which are, after all, basically just loosely chicken-shaped).

Marshmallow extrusion was introduced in the late 40's so marshmallows with the marshmallow shape could be mass produced in the 50's. The Peeps also required some special machinery so they would be peep-shaped and Born automated the process in 1954, a year after he started making Peeps. (Before that they were made by hand.)

Maybe they mean the first Peep. It says the first one was handmade, but the next step talks about machine made ones. Maybe it was a situation of "Check this out" and "I love it, how can we mass produce it?" Just a WAG.
Or was Rodda hand making chicks? It's 4 am so I'm not sure. I think I'm sick.

They probably don't mean the first Peep because the previous owners had been making them by hand for some before 1953 (when Born bought the company). I'm certain it's setting and drying time required when they're made by hand rather than extrusion.
