Icon215 That Tattoo Makes You Look Promiscuous

Does your tattoo make a statement about you? If youíre an attractive woman, it apparently does, regardless of your intention. And that statement is: ďIím easy!Ē Thatís the implication of new research from France, which found men are more likely to approach a woman lying on the beach if she has a butterfly tattoo on her lower back. The guys in this study didnít think the body art made her more attractive. But they believed it increased the likelihood of her being receptive to their romantic overtures.

Shifty Eyes Ink on Skin Doesnít Necessarily Indicate Sin

OTOH:

Body art is like real estate. The key factors are density and location, location, location.

* * *

Thatís the conclusion of the latest research from a group of scholars at Texas Tech University that has spent much of the past decade studying the phenomenon of piercings and tattoos. The paper, just published in The Social Science Journal, suggests the relationship between body art and deviant behavior is significant only for those who have adorned their exteriors in extreme ways.

"Well, I think I'll get a tattoo but I'm on the fence. I was thinking of a unicorn on my ankle. Or maybe something cool like an Egyptian ankh! Let's see what it says in the scientific literature..." Right.

So which came first: the nickname "tramp stamp" or the perception of the kind of woman who has that tattoo?

A new study of college students finds a correlation between body art and deviant behavior, but only for those with multiple tattoos or piercings.
Is that "deviant behaviour" such as getting multiple tattoos or piercings?

(eta) Oh, sorry, it tells you:

Quote:
“Results indicate that respondents with four or more tattoos, seven or more body piercings, or piercings located in their nipples or genitals, were substantially and significantly more likely to report regular marijuana use, occasional use of other drugs, and a history of being arrested for a crime,” the paper continues. “Less pronounced, but still significant in many cases, was an increased propensity for those with higher incidence of body art to cheat on college work, binge drink and report having had multiple sex partners over the course of their lifetime.”
Arrested for a crime such as regular marijuana use, I wonder? Shocking!

I am kind of curious what they mean by multiple sex partners. Do they mean at once, or serially? Is it even common any more for someone to only ever have one sex partner, so that more than one is "deviant"?

Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing. They must mean multiple partners at the same time, that's the only way it makes sense.

Hello Kitty

The first study only tested one kind of tattoo: A butterfly on the lower back. When I see a lower-back butterfly tattoo (or dolphins, or kanji, or several other options, especially if poorly done) I usually think, "That is a person who does not make good decisions."

Maybe the men in the study were hoping poor tattoo decisions will lead to poor dating decisions.

If the term didn't come from the perception where did it come from?

British hobos are famous for their body art.

New study: are people without tattoos more likely to lie to "researchers" asking intrusive questions about their personal lives?

I hope so. If more than one is deviant, I would hate to think what that makes me. I have had more than two, even, hussy that I am.

I can't say that I disagree with the idea that visible tattoos or piercings mark you as easy, but I also don't think that's a bad thing.

Ryda, can you back me up here? I don't think that being into casual sex, one night stands or multiple partners is a bad thing at all. I actually think that it's a good thing. It means that you are more open minded IMHO.

Having visible tats or piercings is often a sign that you are more socially liberated and that's a good thing.

I'm not surprised that people who decorate their body would attract sexual attention. It is probably that the tattoo grabs the other people's attention easier. However, I have no idea how you could go from there to "I'm easy". Just because a person's body decorations are attracting attention doesn't mean that that the person wants attention.

Because everything is about me, so if something attracts my attention, that's clearly what it's there for?

One has to wonder, though, since tattooing developed so early in human history and seems to be practically ubiquitous in the prehistoric and ancient world: Why would someone do something that's relatively dangerous and painful, as it must have been in those times? I find it extremely hard to believe it was just something to do. So I'm not at all surprised if it does something on a very primitive level to, well, encourage procreation - accidental or otherwise.

Wait. I have visible tattoos, so to you that means I'm available for easy sex?

WTF? Unless the tattoo itself says "I am available for easy sex" then I have no idea how you can say that.

My daughter has a visible tattoo. It says "Mom" and features my favorite flowers. I really doubt any guys are looking at that and getting the message that she's "easy."

I really don't think this is the case anymore. Body art is pretty mainstream these days.

Sorry!
