Default $150 million plebiscite: “should gay kids stay in schools?”

https://chaser.com.au/national/liber...ed-in-schools/

Quote:
Prime Minister of the week Scott Morrison has today boldly taken a stand on the issue of gay children attending private schools, stating that it was clear that in the modern age children of any sexuality should not be discriminated against, providing the public agrees to it in a $150 million plebiscite to be held next February.

Stating that there was “simply no way for the government to know” if the public of Australia supported homosexuality – the government, which only last October held a multi-million dollar opinion poll on same-sex relationships, stated that is was simply impossible to be sure what people think on the issue.

“The fact is these are private businesses, and as such government is completely powerless to stop them bullying children,” announced the Prime Minister this afternoon. “I think we can all agree that the government giving the church free reign to harm children has always proven to be the best course of action.”
It should be noted that while the article is jokey, there is a very real threat to gay kids and teachers.

So, this plebiscite is whether private schools should be allowed to discriminate in admissions? Not whether gay kids deserve an education?

The article is from a satirical website, there's no new website. They're poking fun at the government for prevaricating over questions of LGBTQ+ rights when the consensus among the general population is VERY clear, just like the question over same sex marriage that we fought over last year. In that case the government was very very aware that the majority of the population were in favour of it but they still forced the country to hold a plebiscite over the issue, partly to placate the far right section of their own political party (who were incorrectly assuming they were representing "the silent majority", as they usually do), partly to let the angry anti team publicly have their say and partly to delay having to actually act on the issue for as long as possible.

Australia's Prime Minister is staunchly christian and is very much in favour of letting Catholic schools have as much money as he can push their way but even he saw which way the wind is blowing and issued a statement today that schools shouldn't be allowed to turn away students on account of their sexuality:
