I was taught that jacks (ordinary consumer sort of car jacks, anyway) are inherently risky no matter how many there are; and that even if using only one they should only be used to raise the car, or when doing the sort of work that doesn't require putting any part of one's body under the car. If it's necessary to get under the car, or for any body part to be under it, then once the car's been raised on the jack something more stable needs to be added to make sure the car can't fall.

Ditto any equipment raised by a tractor's three point hitch. Put a large solid chunk or so of wood, or cinderblocks, or something under there first if you've got to get underneath said equipment.

So true. The jack that came with the car is only meant to change a tire. A better jack that functions the same way still isn't safe enough if you are getting under the car.

Dawn, the vending machine here is usually out of Cheetos since a few people are Cheetos addicts, and the vending machine guy only puts in 4-5 packages of Cheetos every time he fills up. The machine is then emptied in a couple of days. Meanwhile, the crackers is the next slot have been sitting there for months, as have the weird chip like things. If he pulled those and put Cheetos in their place, his sales would go up. We suggested that to him, and he never did it.

Speaking of junk food oddities, it's oddly difficult to find a bag of plain Fritos in my building -- the snack machines (one on each of five floors) and the cafeteria always have an ample supply of barbecue Fritos, but no plain ones.

This is why I usually bring snacks from home. Well actually I do that mostly because it's probably cheaper in the long run than constantly putting money in the vending machines. But it means I can bring whatever flavor of chips I want without being limited by what's in the vending machine. I actually have a partially eaten full sized bag of Cheetos on my desk right now. Office hack: binder clips are great for closing chip bags.

Binder clips are great. Better than those big plastic "chip clips," IMO.

I asked a guy who stocked the vending machine at one of my old jobs about that, since there were popular items that tended to sell out the day it was stocked and other items that sat there until they expired. He said that it was a contractual issue with the various snack companies.

Sounds like a controlled economy to me. You need to quickly rebel against your convenience food providers and install some sort of "free market" that caters to the needs of the people, or these private companies will inflict a snack-related terror famine to stamp out your resistance.

That could be. I hope it is the reason, since at least then there IS a reason other than the guy not figuring out that he could make a LOT more money, but I am not sure. The vending machine guy is not very good. He will go weeks without tending the machines, so they sit empty for a long time, then will come every few days for a while.

I wish I could find a complete gallery of all the befores and afters on Trading Spaces, but I can't. I can find a few of the most memorable ones, but not all of them.

Weird thing is that I don't really enjoy watching the show. Watching people paint walls just sounds dull as heck. But there was a website that had all the befores and afters and it was amusing to go through and be like, "What the heck?!" regarding them.

Not surprised to hear that Hildi is in the reboot. You can't have Trading Spaces without having Hildi. It's like telling the story of Snow White, but leaving out the evil queen, or Wizard of Oz without the Wicked Witch of the West, or...I could go on, but I think I've made my point. Glad that Vern's back though. He actually listened to the homeowners and made some of the best rooms, though he really likes the color red.

Ours hasn't had them in a while. They're chicken something and I don't care for them. Veggie samosas are the best. At least they still have (I hope) Aloo Chaat.

It's cheaper in the short run, too.

I bring my snacks from home because I can get 1 oz bags, which are 160 calories per instead of 1.5 oz bags, which are 240. I buy them in bulk through Amazon.

My FWP is that our bathrooms at work are closed for renovation and we have to go down a floor when we have to pee (going up is not an option; we're on the top floor and the roof is not accessible to us peons).

That would be part of Dawn's Law of Bodily Frustration: when you really really really need to use the bathroom, they are all closed for cleaning.

Corollary: the ones that are open will either a) all be occupied; or b) have no TP.

Speaking of bathrooms, why is it that you can control your need to use one until you get through your front door and then suddenly what was a need becomes an urgency and you're racing for the bathroom as if you're being pursued by the hounds from hell? And God help you if racing has become a lost skill!

My daughter and I were just talking about this last night! Same thing happens when I get out of the tub.

ETA re: Trading Spaces, I watched one of the new episodes. Hildi covered the walls -- and maybe the ceiling -- of a room with cardboard. She has a problem.

I know it's the time of year and I shouldn't be surprised but spending $4.99 for a package of romaine lettuce and ending up throwing out at least half the package is both a little thing that annoys me and a FWP. I'm going to have to find another way to make salad for awhile I guess.

You can't. The charitable institutions like youth sports organizations and grade school bands have a monopolistic grip on Corporate America Office Candy sales, and you don't want to get in the way of Big Candy. Let's just say that the demise of Agustus Gloop was not just a cautionary tale....

God, could you send me some? I haven't seen BBQ Fritos in southern California for decades. (The Chili-Cheese ones are ubiquitous. I also occasionally see the Honey BBQ "Twist" variety, but they're not as good -- the spiral shape keeps the flavor powder from being fully exposed.)

(Then again, I'm still holding a grudge against KFC for introducing their Honey BBQ chicken some years back, getting me totally hooked, and then discontinuing it, though they occasionally tease us with Honey BBQ Wings or sandwiches.)

What I really miss are BBQ flavored Wampum chips from Granny Goose -- similar to Fritos, but a slightly different texture. Those were awesome, though I suspect they'd need to rename the product if they wanted to re-introduce it...
