So instead of the robot being theirs and Dr. Smith being an enemy agent and accidental stowaway, it appears they find them both stranded on the same planet.

I'll give this a watch. I liked the original, so... into my watchlist it goes!

Wait, wait, Smith was an enemy agent in the original series? I never picked up on that at all! In my defense I was really little when this show was on.

Yup. He was a double agent sent onto the Jupiter 2 to sabotage the ship (and/or the robot) and got stuck on board when it launched. IIRC his superiors did that on purpose to get rid of him to keep the sabotage a secret. His unaccounted-for weight and his meddling before takeoff was what got them lost.

The first season was pretty serious in tone. It only got campy later on.

The movie was the same except that it was just his pre-launch sabotage that got them lost.

That's the intro to Farscape, right? Haven't seen it in a long time, but that was a great show.

I'm two episodes in and so far I like it. I definitely suggest checking it out, even if you're not a fan of the original.

At first I wasn't sure what to think about the Robot being an alien AI, but there's a whole meta-plot around that and I'm ok with it now seeing how it's coming together. It looks like what the Robot is and where it came from is going to be the story arc for season 1. Or at least a big part of it.

There's some tension in the Robinson family that the original series would never have done, and it changes the dynamic. Basically John and Maureen are not exactly a happily married couple. It complicates the daily fight for survival on an alien world.

Don West and Dr. Smith don't show up until late in episode 1, and that's ok. They're in there, and it's a good setup for the two not really liking each other at all (much like the original series).

So, whether you're a fan of the original or the movie or not, give it a watch if you have Netflix.

Smith this time appears to be so prone to backstabbing that she actually endangers herself to double-cross someone. Without any apparent gain, even.

True... despite my good review I'm still trying to figure that one out myself.

Okay, done with the third episode.

I swear, it's like whoever built the Jupiter class dropships was trying to maximize the chance of cargo breaking loose and hitting someone any time there's an emergency.

Also, John and Maureen seem to have a dysfunctional relationship just to add drama to the story. Every time they fight it feels so wooden and forced.

And Dr. Smith's real name is June Harris? Really? Combining the names of two original cast members for her? Into a name that sounds like the original Smith actor's name?

I don't know if I should golf clap or roll my eyes.

More spoilered out... The actual Dr. Z Smith in the first episode of the reboot was Billy Mumy. I suspected as much but just now confirmed it.

Yeah, I noticed that the writers were throwing numbers out at random.

Like in the first scene when the computer is displaying distance to impact in meters while reporting it in feet, or the "it's going to fall to -60 degrees" while they all have uncovered faces, and the lake freezing fast enough for Penny to get trapped as the ice rose from the bottom.

I've seen five episodes so far and and I definitely have mixed feelings. On the plus side,

So far, I'm enjoying the whole subplot with the robot and how it's an AI and not part of the original crew. On the minus side,

For me, this is the biggest flaw. The 1998 movie for all its faults gave at least gave a plausible reason why they kept Dr. Smith on board. Here, I don't get it. What possible reasons could the Robinsons have in keeping her around? It's maddening too because Parker Posey is a wonderful actor.

Yeah, with all the money Netflix has obviously spent on this show you would think they would have hired a science advisor.

Anyway, I'm going to watch the remaining episodes with a cautious optimism.

Better that direction than the other. In Prometheus, they managed to travel 39 light years in 500 million miles (about where Jupiter is).

And of course I've already seen instances of racists and MRAs decrying the show... for Judy and Don not being Caucasian, and for Maureen being the de facto head of the Robinson family instead of John.

As long as the trailer has been out I'm surprised it took them this long.

I'm not so sure about that. The best estimates I can find of the size of the entire universe is on the order of 150 billion light years, so "trillions of light years" off course is several universes away.
