Since we’re still on Page One here, can I make a reference to a book called Zombie Bums From Uranus, where this joke is made constantly?

I think everybody's does.

Why was this name chosen for a planet? Hells bells, there are plenty of other classic names out there its discoverer could have used!

Because it was the name of a Greek god and that's how planets were named.

Interestingly, if true*, the name originates from a word for rain that is the origin of the word urination.

Well, for one thing, it wasn't chosen by someone who speaks English. I suspect it's less funny in other languages.

Though only Uranus is named after a Greek god. All the others (except Earth) are named after Roman gods.

I listened to a science-based podcast years ago where the topic of Uranus came up in the discussion, and its probably a sad thing that the only comment I can remember from it was someone making the observation that, and I'm paraphrasing, "There's no good way to pronounce the name, because somebody will always make a mental connection to peeing or pooping... and then nothing you say about it afterwards makes any difference."

Shifty Eyes

What about pronouncing it "you're IN us"?

Oh. Never mind.

I do, but Psihala is right. I always feel like I'm back in grade school whenever I refer to the Seventh Planet.

It should be properly rendered Ouranos

Quote:
Ancient Greek Οὐρανός, Ouranos [uranós] meaning "sky" or "heaven") was the primal Greek god personifying the sky

It's the anglification of foreign names that causes this issue. You can find a reverse of the phenomenon in Putin's name being Poutine, in French, despite his not being covered in cheese and gravy.

Wouldn't that be gaulification?

Rename to Caelus, the Roman god that fills the same role. Why they went with the Greek Uranus, rather than the Roman like every other planet is beyond me. Maybe Johann Elert Bode, the guy who named it, knew it would be a joke and wanted it that way. He was German, but he may have spoken English.

Ouranos has the added benefit of somehow looking cooler, if that is a quality that can be assigned to a word

Not really, because the issue is when the sound "ou" in French and other latin languages gets rendered in English. IT gets rendered as "U" but the letter u has more than just the "oo" sound leading to what we've got here (which is the way he likes it sorry, couldn't help it).

Would that be pronounced "ce-alus"?

If so, that would really straighten things up!
