That is just foolish. The 6-year old should have a gun instead, for safety! (And yes, I thought the suspect was the 6-year old.)

The neighbors said he yelled and fired shots over damage he claimed their pickup truck did to a make-shift speed bump in the dirt road.
My perception is that the usual reason people take it upon themselves to create a speed bump is so drivers will slow down on that stretch of road, and it's usually out of concern for the safety of children who live there.

I'm curious why this nutcase made his speed bump; he's obviously not concerned at all about safety, for children or adults. I hope this standoff ends peacefully, for many reasons, but mainly I want to find out WTF.

I thought the stand-off occurred between the suspect and a 6-year-old, not between police and a suspect with a 6-year-old hostage.

Yeah, that was my initial reading as well.

Yeah, really bad headline. I thought one of the stand-off participants was 6 years old, and I wasn't clear on whether he was the suspect or not.

As for the speed bump thing, that reminds me of a case in central Oregon, IIRC, where a woman claimed that she owned a part of one of the county roads. She would construct barricades to block it off, she once tried to jackhammer part of it, etc. She was arrested for some of these activities. It was clear that it was some kind of mental illness issue, but she was a frequent litigation participant, both with civil cases she was filing and civil and criminal cases in which she was the defendant.

There have been a few updates to the article. Apparently the child is safe, but still captive. And the man has a history of violence and confrontation, including the beating death of a dog that strayed onto his property.

Cite? The article recounts several instances of violent unjustified attacks by this man. That is precisely the sort of person that the 'gun lobby' has been saying should not be allowed to possess or carry guns.

Apparently the boy has ADHD & is on the autism spectrum. The kidnapper has allowed the boys meds to be brought to him but this poor kid cannot be a easy hostage. I'm very concerned about his welfare.

As a parent, I cannot even begin to imagine what this poor boy or his parents are going through. To think that this child's life is in the hands of someone with such severe mental issues is, to say the least, devastatingly frightening.

I certainly hope the unthinkable doesn't happen. And I hope that one way or the other, after this ordeal is over, the entire family gets the counseling that they're going to so desperately need. I'll be honest -- If I were the parents, I can't say I'd be able to go back to resuming a normal life after an ordeal like this. I would probably need just as much counseling as the boy.

Ugh. I was watching CNN yesterday & they made a point that the gunman & the bus driver knew each other. Excuse me, the population of the town is about 2,200. It would have been weirder if they didn't know each other. That doesn't mean that they were buddy buddy or even friends. But in a town that size you at least have an idea who everyone is. There were people in my school that I knew & knew a lot about but I would have in no way called them friends. We had just grown up in the same small town & you just learn stuff along the way.

Unless he wants to buy a gun from a private seller, of course.
