Canada Moose derails train

Comment: A story I first heard, possibly 20 or 30 years ago:

A moose derailed a train, somewhere in Canada, possibly Ontario.

The premise is that the moose was in rut (deranged) and charged full tilt
at a train on an outside curve. Because the train was already unbalanced,
it was relatively easy for the train to derail. Also, probably the moose
did not survive.

Do you have records of verifiable 'True' occurrences of moose vs trains?

I know a moose-car collision can be deadly for all concerned.

In that account, the train hit the moose head-on.

I'm not convinced a moose could derail a train by running into the side of it, even on a curve.

I agree, moose are hit by trains all the time, and derailings are almost unknown. They can mess up a car, but a train is not severely damaged by a moose. A train is usually not even severely damaged by a car...

The only way I can see that a moose could derail a train is if some hard part of it got under the wheels or if the collision caused stones to land on the rail, it simply doesn't have enough mass and momentum to derail it any other way.

Troberg, You are thinking of Swedish moose. A Texas moose would be much bigger. If we had moose that is.
