Icon102 Global warming and unforced variability: Clarifications on recent Duke study

We were pleased with some of coverage of our study (e.g., here) but we were disappointed that some outlets published particularly misleading articles (e.g, here, here, and here). Since there appears to be some confusion regarding our studys findings, we would like to clarify some points (see also MM4As discussion).

Part of the confusion stems form the Duke University press release which used the headline “Global Warming More Moderate Than Worst-Case Models”. The news department created this headline as a replacement for our suggested headline of “Global Warming Progressing at Moderate Rate, Empirical Data Suggest”
It is so cute how naive the writer is. You don't go from either of those headlines to "New Evidence Against Global Warming" from a misunderstanding.

I thought people stopped using the name "global warming" for the less confusing "climate change" years ago.

The study was measuring surface temperature, which (according to NASA) is global warming. Climate change is the overall change of all temperatures and all of the weather, etc changes that could result.

Sometimes being able to see the URL tells you everything you need to know.

I thought probably a misfired attempt at being gracious.
