Default Memes that annoy you

The old thread was locked, so:

Even if all that stuff is true (I didn't bother to look it up), that doesn't mean maple syrup is good for you!. It's still sugar!

Sugar isn't, in and of itself, bad for you. Neither is fat. Or protein. Or starch. Or anything.

However, if maple syrup has minerals cane sugar doesn't, that could be useful information if you're lacking in them.

Not sure what the rate of deficiency is for any of those things, though.

Yeah, but sugar is one of those things Westerners generally eat too much of already, so it's fair to say/imply that it is bad for you.

"Silly rabbit, Easter is for Jesus!"

Excuse me? You celebrate Easter your way, and I'll celebrate it mine.

Just out of curiosity, according to that person, what is the One True Way to celebrate Easter?

Sugar isn't inherently bad for you, but the 4 Tablespoons mentioned above is 1/4 cup. Unless you are using the maple syrup to replace all of the sugar in your diet (which would be difficult if you don't make everything you consume from scratch) consuming a 1/4 cup of maple syrup per day in addition to significant amounts of other dietary sugar, will likely be an overall bad health decision.

Dunno. That's all the meme said. We don't really have time to analyze because there are more memes to post. This particular person posts almost nothing but memes. Mostly glurge about parenting, kids, friendship, aging, etc., with a healthy dollop of Jesus. And she posts them ALL. DAY. LONG. She's like a meme-machine.

I blocked her because she not only never says anything interesting, she never says anything at all!

Apparently not. I got blocked by a relative a few years ago because I disagreed with her objections to google making their doodle about Cesar Chavez's birthday when it fell on Easter. Bing, with decorated Easter eggs as its theme, was fine. Apparently, eggs are the symbol of rebirth, which celebrates the resurrection of the Lord and Savior. Chavez, with his devout Catholicism and defense of underpaid workers, was not fine at all. It probably didn't help that she seemed to have him conflated with Hugo Chavez.

I ran into a friend in Target who was complaining about how the gift giving and everything has gotten out of control at Easter. I suggested that she just her buy her kids chocolate crosses to remind them the true meaning of Easter, 'Jesus died on a big chocolate cross for our sins'. I might have said it too loudly based on the horrified look of a woman walking by.

To be honest I do feel the gift giving has gotten crazy or to be more accurate the ways stores are trying to push the gift giving has gotten crazy. Most people I know still do Easter pretty much the way we did with our kids and the way my parents did with us (basket of goodies and maybe one or two small toys). Stores though are dreaming the dream - it's Christmas in the Spring! I don't know how many people are actually buying into that dream though.

And as with most christian holidays, wasn't the date stolen from a pagan celebration?

Rabbit

As with most of such "holidays stolen from the pagans" stories the answer is between "not really" and "not not nearly as much as many people think". The date, for example, comes from Passover so, no, it wasn't at all.

Speaking as a non-Christian: the few days after Easter are great days to buy chocolate on sale.

(I suspect quite a few Christians are very aware of this also. The selection isn't usually very good for more than a few days.)

You don't have to be a non-Christian to take advantage of 50% off chocolate bunnies . I wasn't really thinking of chocolate though, the weekly flyers have been pushing toys the last few weeks and seem to be suggesting that parents are putting piles of prezzies under the old Easter tree. I'm sure there are families out there that do this but I don't know anyone personally who does. Ah well, to each his/her own.

Judging from this, you would like the Easter egg a friend painted for us a few years back. It shows the Easter bunny on the cross, complete with crown of thorns and everything.

I would seriously love a 50% off chocolate bunny right now. None to be found unfortunately.

When I told my co-workers that my parents never gave me an easter basket full of goodies, you'd've thought I said they beat me with a baseball bat. We got empty baskets to use for hunting eggs after church, but Easter as a gift giving occasion was actively frowned upon by my parents.

Me, too. And the eggs were real, hard boiled ones, and after we found them all we made egg salad sandwiches. No candy at all. And the baskets were just ones my mother had around. And I always thought I had fun at Easter. Silly me.
