Default Yes, Bill Murray's Baloo will sing "The Bear Necessities"

SING. Bill Murray will SING "The Bear Necessities". GEEZ.

Article here. Much as I enjoy Bill Murray's work, I'm trepidatious about how he'll approach the character. To me, Baloo should be warm, welcoming, and sincere. Mr. Murray excels as laying a thin veneer of irony across the top of most of the characters he plays. I'm not sure that he can pull off genuine warmth, and I really don't want to see Baloo as a smarmy hipster who's too cool for school.

I'm trying to remember the last thing that Bill Murray's done that I liked and didn't have Ghostbusters in the title.

It isn't really coming.

Groundhog Day?

He's really pretty active, although many of the roles are in movies that are not big blockbusters, and are not meant to be.

He pulled off genuine warmth magnificently in Monuments Men, IMO. Especially in the scene where his tentmate got the camp announcer to play his daughters tape over the loudspeakers.

I do wonder if he can do sincerity. I can't recall having seen him in that mode. Baloo shouldn't really be played for irony. I'm not sure how "live action" works in this context. If he's just the voice for a CGI bear, then it might make it easier, since it's his Bill Murray face that does half the work of making him seem insincere.

No accounting for you're crazy.

Other good roles:
Every Wes Anderson movie ever
Zombieland (as himself, post-apocalypse)

Maybe John Cleese could offer some advice.

Psychic

For some reason I noticed it was trendy to trash it these days. I guess it could just be a bit of backlash given that it was very visible upon its release.

I'm ambivalent about it, but I will say that I think any flaws were in the script and not the performances, so I wouldn't fault Murray there. I excluded it from my list of good roles not to disparage it but because it's relatively controversial, and I didn't want to derail the discussion into a tangent with the person who inevitably won't have liked it.

I got dressed down by an Asian woman for saying it was decent. Some people think it's racist. It's also pretty depressing at best, so there are plenty of reasons to dislike it.
