Skull 'Piggy Bank' turtle dies after eating 915 good luck coins

Quote:
A 25-year-old Thai sea turtle died from blood poisoning on Tuesday, never recovering from an operation to remove 915 coins from her stomach, thrown into her pool for good luck, veterinarians said.

The green turtle named Omsin, "Piggy Bank" in Thai, underwent a seven-hour-long operation this month to remove five kilograms of coins, which she had mistaken for food.

I am starting to believe every person should learn that it's not allowed to drop anything, unless it is purely biodegradable, such as salt, seeds, apple cores and so on. And even then, only when appropriate.

Everything else has to be deposited in an appropriate bin. Fountains and pools are not appropriate bins.

Also works for lakes, oceans, rivers, etc.

No

Maybe we could start an urban ledgend that throwing coins into any body of water apart from the Fontana di Trevi in Rome brings bad luck?

That fountain and the 1954 movie are what started the world-wide "throwing coins into water" tradition. If we can limit it back to the one fountain, much will be gained.

I once visited a cave on the island of Lanzarote that has a small subterran lake that is home to an endemic crab. There where signs all around the lake that it is forbidden to toss coins into the water as it poisions the crabs that only exist here and nowhere else on the world. Nevertheless, there where numbers of coins in the lake.
