Cow Crazed cows and toad invasions? Superstitious views on the earthquake

Can earthquakes be predicted, their destructive impact forewarned?

Most scientists would say no. But if some insistent Chinese bloggers are to be believed, nature provided enough warning to have saved many of those who perished.

In the days before the deadly earthquake shook much of mountainous Sichuan Province, their stories go, ponds inexplicably drained, cows flung themselves against their enclosures and swarms of toads invaded the streets of a town that was later devastated by the quake.

The idea that animals and fish are somehow aware of earthquakes is not as ridiculous as it sounds. The movement of the earth's plates before and during an earthquake produces vast amounts of electrical discharge, (I'm not an expert so don't ask for details), which some animal can detect.
Similar research is being done in Japan.
But this is quite different from saying that it can be used to predict earthquakes, as many other things can effect animal behaviour. Pollution, sighing a predator, sudden noise. Everyone's has a story to tell AFTER the quake, not before it.
