WWE Hall of Famer 'Mean' Gene Okerlund Dies at Age 76

Legendary WWE interviewer "Mean" Gene Okerlund has died at the age of 76, WWE.com announced Wednesday.

Since he originated from local television up here, and got his start with the AWA, again a local organization, his passing is getting quite a bit of coverage up here.

Met him many, many years ago. A hotel I was staying in was next to the Arena in Winnipeg. I came in one evening and the hotel lounge was closed off. I asked what was going on and was told that as a guest of the hotel, I could enter. So, I did.

About and hour and 3 beers later, in walked the stars of the WWF (as they were known at the time) after their performance next door. I got to meet many of the big names. Okerlund was gracious and a hoot. He did not stick around too long, but long enough to have a chat with just about everybody in the lounge. I ended up hanging out with Jimmy Hart for over an hour. He was cool.
