Ponder University passes out hockey pucks as possible defense against active shooters

Hockey pucks have been known to cause some serious injuries on the rink, but now school officials are hoping that they can do similar damage in more dangerous situations.

Hmm, I think that hockey pucks are only slightly higher than harsh language on my list of effective defenses.

Hiring Don Rickles as a security consultant was probably a mistake.

As I recall, there was a guy who suggested that public schools have buckets of rocks in their classroom to use against potential shooters. It is marginally better than “Give teachers guns!” proposals but not by much. Because if we give teachers guns, it’ll just lead to Black kids getting shot. Black kids are already disproportionately punished and expelled from schools at a greater rate than white ids. Teacher would feel just awful when it turns out that the black kid loitering in the hall was just reaching for his/her cell phone, but the black kid would still be dead, and nothing would be done about it. Plus, Philando Castile was a teacher with a gun and look how well that worked out for him.

Have you ever handled a hockey puck? While it may seem silly on the surface, there are some merits to the idea.

Hockey pucks fit rather easily into the hand (better when not wearing hockey gloves)

The flattened shape allows a much better throw - think about skipping stones.

The flat side keeps them from rolling away as easily as a ball.

Hockey pucks are solid vulcanized rubber. Very hard, but with some bounce to them.

This is Hockeytown! (OK, Northern suburb but the thought is the same)

These are not meant as a deterrent as much as a last line of defense and/or source of distraction. It is not as silly as a bucket of rocks and does have some practicality.

And most people can't throw them with significant force or accuracy at the same range that someone could shoot them with a handgun from.

I've heard rocks and now I've heard hockey pucks. Let's go ahead and get some other bad ideas out of the way:

Bowling Balls
Baseballs
Golf Balls
Shuttlecocks
Water Balloons

I think they should use stink bombs. If every class lit off a few of them, the shooters would flee, right?
At least as good an idea as hockey pucks. Why can't we just do the clear idea that would help, and greatly reduce the amount of guns available?

Because this is America and we’re effectively being held hostage by a group of glib sociopaths obsessed with fellating gun manufacturers. Only a small number of gun-owners belong to the NRA and most gun-owners support some kind of regulations when it comes to guns. Yet the NRA is still allowed to effectively hold the country hostage. They are oddly silent when it comes to actual cases of citizens being persecuted and murdered by the authorities for exercising their second amendment rights, like Philando Castile or Emantic Bradford Jr.

It’s why I have suggested and will continue to suggest that we just shut the NRA out of these discussions. Since all they say is more guns would solve everything, there’s no need to quote or interview them, because it’s no longer news.

Every class should have a jar full of Cherry bombs and other small firecrackers to use to scare off active shooters. Kind of like how some cultures light fireworks to scare off evil spirits!

I say we quit farting around with half-assed schemes and just put a bucket of guns in each classroom.

ETA: Don't worry, we'll be safe. We'll put on sign on the bucket, "Do not use except in case of active shooter."

I think we need to go back to the times of the wild west when everyone carried a gun all the time and knew how to use it! That would control crime.

Whisper, whisper.

What, states had strict gun control laws? The Texas constitution actually prohibited concealed carry in 1886. Oh my. See https://www.smithsonianmag.com/histo...est-180968013/
