Not really that fast. This ABC report shows a school bus crash test at 30 mph. The entire front end of the bus is crushed. If you pause the video at 1:19, the body appears to have sheared off from the frame (the hub of the rear wheel is pushed back at least a foot or more).

Thanks for the facts.

Reports now say the deceased were one student and one teacher.

The guys I know who make silly costumes out of cardboard and stage mock battles put out a call for volunteers yesterday because a Japanese TV crew wanted to film a segment with them. I was working so I couldn't make it but I asked what the name of the show was because I was interested in googling it and the guy on our end who was organising it all said he couldn't remember the name of the show but it was apparently one of the biggest TV shows in Japan. So I don't hear anything else but later that night some of the participants started posting Facebook updates like "Well THAT was disturbing" and it wasn't until later today that I heard about what happened.

So everyone arrived a few hours early and put in some work constructing costumes but the TV crew called right when they said they'd arrive and said they'd be another two hours plus they were changing the location ... so everyone moved across to the other location and waited two hours and then the TV crew arrived and set up and started filming and it was only at that point that they told them "Oh by the way, we'll need everyone to be naked except for these tighty-whities we're providing .... and you'll be wrestling our host who'll be completely nude .... that's the format of our show." So everyone pretty much went "Um, no" but then they thought about it for a bit and went "Well we've gone to all this trouble already so we might as well .... plus if the show is as big as they say it is it'll still be good publicity" so they agreed to strip down to just their underwear and have a mock battle with the Japanese host who was also wearing nothing but a cardboard diaper.

So yeah, I think my friends got tricked into doing weird Japanese fetish porn and they didn't even get paid for it. They did get to keep the underwear though.

Also I bet that guy really regrets not remembering the name of the show so I could google it and warn them about it.

Yesterday, coming out of the grocery store parking lot, I was behind a car with a license plate that said BLAKES7. After that car turned out, another car turned in, with the license plate LAZERTH. I confess it took me way longer than it should have to figure out that was Lazareth, because on the heels of Blake's 7, I thought it was a lazer tag reference.

The other shoe dropped today; my boss announced she is, indeed, leaving. I thought I had prepared myself for this, but I hadn't. She and my recently-departed supervisor are the best managers I've ever worked for; they taught me everything I know about this job, and they created a culture in our office that made it somehow a great place to spend grueling hours. I'm cycling through tears and an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I got to work for them as long as I did. Oh, and fear about what's next-- that's jumping into the fray too. And maybe a little anger at her boss, who created the working conditions that led to her departure. (Nothing sinister, just the insane hours with no way to step back to be there for your kids for a minute while they grow up without stepping out entirely.)

My husband has been trying to cheer me up, which is really getting on my nerves. I just need to wallow right now.

We need another couch and one of my housemates spotted one someone had put out with a "Free please take" sign on the other side of our suburb. A couple hours later the other housemate got home and asked me if I wanted to walk over there and check it out and I said "I just checked on google street view and the couch isn't there any more" and he totally believed me.

I took my cat to the vet's for her annual shots. I go to the cheap shots clinic and you don't go back with the pet, but they get a quick once over along with the shots. She's in great shape for being at least 14, and when she was returned to me the tech said not to comb her, brush her or bathe her for the next three days.

Yeah, I have zero problems not batheing her for the next three days.

Esprise Me, I know how you feel. I found out a few weeks ago that my geneticist is retiring. Turns out that it is a budgetary issue and the hospital couldn't pay for more than two days a week for her. She has been fighting to find ways to keep her on since at least November. I am super pissed at the hospital for doing this, but I am also somewhat pissed at the geneticist because she is using up all her PTO before leaving which doesn't give us much time to see patients. Then we just found out yesterday that we won't get paid out for our unused PTO, of which I have 10 days, and we can't just use them up at the end or take a long break. It is infuriating and confirms that HR is not there to protect the employee but to protect the employer.

Did they say why?

Did they give her something as a topical that they don't want you to wash off? But why would you not be able to comb or brush her, especially if you avoided the area of application? (And the cat is going to wash herself, isn't she?)

So you avoid the area where the shots -soreness- were given has always been my guess. At least they've stopped urging cat owners to keep their cats from jumping up and down. Because...how?

I've worked for several veterinarians over the years and have never heard that recommendation. At most, we advise people that their pet might be sore at the injection site for a day or two, but there's no reason not to comb, brush, or bathe them after a vaccination.

Unless she has a skin condition, or they applied something topical, that they forgot to tell you about?

I have taken cats to several veterinarians over the years and have never heard that recommendation, either. Not even when they had just given a topical; though it's certainly possible they (correctly) assumed I wasn't routinely bathing cats.

And the only times I've been given recommendations to try to dissuade cats from jumping was right after surgery; never after vaccinations. (The post-surgery cats didn't always listen to the recommendations, either. And the only way I can think of to enforce it would be to keep the cat shut in a room with nothing to jump on -- which I haven't got -- or possibly to keep the cat in a carrier or crate, which would not make for a happy cat.)

There was a massive fire in my hometown yesterday. The equivalent of 3 city blocks burned down or was damaged by the fire fighting.

58 families are out of home right now.

The only solace I am taking right now is that no one was injured or killed in the fires or fighting them.

I grew up just a few blocks from there, so I'm very familiar with the businesses and buildings affected.

UEL, how terrible. I'm glad at least everybody got out alive.

-- there are a couple of villages around here that had their downtowns rebuilt entirely in brick (wood construction is far more common in this area) after major fires early in the previous century took out multiple buildings, the fire spreading from one to another. One of the stories you linked to made a reference to bricks popping in the heat, though, so maybe some in this case were made of brick and burned anyway.

I'm assuming you see the connection between these two statements, and the illogic of being pissed at her for taking the time she's entitled to, since she can't get the money instead.

I went to Vegas and saw Cher. The show was terrific, although a little slow (because she changes her clothes between songs). All her hits except Bang Bang. We were in the 4th row, center section (although not the center of the row).

Man, for a 72 year old woman, she looks damn good.

I was in my room watching a video with my headphones on and I slowly realised that I could hear a weird sawing noise, fairly slow but steadily repeating every few seconds. ZZZZZZ!! zzzzzz ZZZZZZ!! zzzzzz ZZZZZZ!! zzzzzz ZZZZZZ!! zzzzzz over and over and over for nearly twenty minutes. I got up and wandered around listening out of a few windows trying to figure out where the noise was coming from before I realised that my housemate was using some sort of exercise machine in his room.

Recently the custodians replaced the urinal mats in some of the men's rooms in my office building. The old ones were blue, or something like that (it's not like I pay that much attention to the color of the urinal mats). The new ones are yellow. I don't know who picked that color, but that's seriously the worst color they could have picked for a urinal mat. When you walk into a men's room and see yellow in the bottom of the urinal on first glance it totally looks like something else.

I had heard of this Isle of Dogs movie and I kind of knew it was supposed to be set in Japan but now I just saw some clips. It doesn't look anything like an "homage" to me at all. It just looks like straight-up old fashioned (I mean, 1950's? 1940's??) stereotyping.
