I actually did sign this petition, and I think that like most who did so, did it to point out how stupid/ridiculous the secession petitions are. Well, that and... *Death Star, hello!

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

Literally, the fourth or fifth comment on Yahoo's reporting of the Death Star petition was someone complaining that a bunch of weirdos (I forget the exact epithet, except I was surprised it wasn't political and didn't have "tard" at the end) caused a government official to spend a single cent of government money answering that question.

In fact, the Yahoo comments showed that a lot of people who comment there 1.) lack any sense of humor at all, and 2.) are jerks.

If they're anything like the people on the video game forums I frequent, they probably think the Chief of Science and Space should have been using that valuable time to solve the debt crisis.


ETA: And it's not even as if the response was entirely frivolous. The last couple paragraphs call for more people to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering, all of which would benefit the country in the long run.

But I guess if anyone on the government's payroll looks like they're having fun, they must be wasting taxpayer money...

The White House announced this week that it has increased the threshold to receive an official response from 25,000 signatures to 100,000 signatures. The new threshold applies only to petitions created after the change and, as before, petitioners have only 30 days to gather enough names.
