No A Tragic Loss

My codolences go out to the driver's family and my sympathies to Tesla as well but this quote bothered me.
We learned yesterday evening that NHTSA is opening a preliminary evaluation into the performance of Autopilot during a recent fatal crash that occurred in a Model S. This is the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated. Among all vehicles in the US, there is a fatality every 94 million miles. Worldwide, there is a fatality approximately every 60 million miles. It is important to emphasize that the NHTSA action is simply a preliminary evaluation to determine whether the system worked according to expectations.
Hours driven before one fatal accident can't be directly compared to the average hours for each fatality. (See claims from the 1990's that the Concorde had a great safety record because it had never had a crash - even though it never had enough flights to compare it to other commercial aircraft.) Also, all driving miles are not the same. These systems are not used for all driving, just in certain places and much of those have been in testing under even more special circumstances and not average drivers either. Finally, in case someone wants to abuse the stats further and say this shows automated cars are safer (even though, again, it doesn't at all yet we do see such claims from time to time), these cars are always supposed to be working together with drivers. A car and driver working together may indeed turn out to be safer than a human driver alone but it says nothing about cars driving themselves.

All true. There need to be a lot of caveats to those statistics to figure out what they really mean.

But it is an important thing to discussion, one that we (people in general) often seem to ignore, when assessing liability. Kind of like pesticides. On the one hand they may be among the most toxic chemicals known to man, on the other they are an essential component to modern agriculture. The potential negative consequences of a technology need to be considered along with the positives.
