Icon108 Wrestler throws a match

Comment: I heard a story about a high school wrestler who was very good,
but apparently pushed heavily by his father. The wrestler (from Wisconsin
I heard) had won three previous state championships (or some
championships), but when he reached the state title match his senior year,
he went out on the mat and dropped down on his back. He let his opponent
pin him, saying, "This one's for you, Dad."

Is this true?

Wow. That's one of those stories where even if someone dredged up an article that noted that a high school kid did that (which doesn't strike me as likely; coverage of relatively minor high school sports like wrestling doesn't usually dig for controversy for a variety of reasons), it would be an urban legend. It has the look and feel of an urban legend, complete with a properly scolding moral of the story ("don't push your son too hard or he will hate you for it")(I would have also accepted "If you're going to push your son hard at something and make him hate you for it, at least push him hard at something people have actually heard of"). The veracity of the story has, I think, very little to do with why the meme has survived.

No, it's not true, but he did get detention for taping Larry Lester's buns together.
