Doņa Ana County DA's office defends handling of 'No Mansplaining' signs

https://www.lcsun-news.com/story/new...ns/2126020002/

Are 'No Mansplaining' signs sexist?
Office manager Yvette Sierra testified that when she first noticed a sign on Brulotte's door bearing the legend "No Mansplaining" with a circle and a slash through it similar to a "No Smoking" sign, she did not know what it meant but worried it was discriminatory against men.

Not sure is the link will work as the electronic edition of the paper is a part of my subscription.

The link did work, but I had to take a short quiz first, and see a lot of ads. The mansplaning ads sound like the smallest part of a labor battle, but yeah, I can see them being an issue to some.

Glad the link worked. And yes, the mansplaining is just a part of a larger labor dispute.

I just have the urge to point out that putting the circle and slash symbol over the words "no mansplaining" makes it a double negative, meaning "No 'no mansplaining'", meaning mansplaining is allowed. Which means I'm allowed to point that out.

And I'm reading my own post in Sheldon Cooper's voice, because it totally sounds like something he would say.

In contrast, Byers, who is African-American, went as far as to compare "No Mansplaining" signs to his memories of growing up under racial segregation in Alabama in the 1960's.

"That was during a time when people had no problem putting signs out there saying people who looked like me or people who were Hispanic were not welcome," Byers said.
Why yes, that's a perfect analogy. After all, behaving in a sexist and condescending way is as immutable and integral to a man's identity as his race.

There, now I'm being sexist, and now you have something to complain about.

I think the term mansplaining is a microaggression.

Microaggressions are seemingly insignificant or inoffensive actions performed so often towards somebody who doesn't appreciate them that they add up to a pattern of abusive behaviour.

For example, tousling somebody's hair every time you walk past their desk could be a microaggression. Calling somebody 'sweetheart' could be a microaggression. A parent constantly telling one child about how successful another child is could be a microaggression.

The term mansplaining would be a regular sized aggression.

Which isn't to say that aggressiveness isn't ever warranted. In fact, the behaviour described as mansplaining is itself often a form of microaggression so calling it out with macro-aggression could be pretty darn effective!
