My daughter flew to Seattle today on an apartment/job-hunting trip ahead of her move there in June. She's really excited about the trip, and I'm excited for her (and proud and anxious).
She's scheduled some fun stuff, too, things she loved doing when we lived there years ago -- ferry rides, the aquarium, etc. Among other things, she scored $40 tickets to a Weird Al concert at Woodland Park Zoo. |

Did you use a bundt pan to bake the cake you used?

I used layer cake pans, made about a dozen of them and cut out the middle. We took a piece of pcv pipe, sterilized it and built the cake around it. the finished project had several pounds of black icing on it. I called it the monolith.

Maybe it's just one of those coincidences....but it seems like I've got ex-boyfriends and former male friends coming out of the woodwork wanting to reconnect, and a lot of my male friends seem to be going out of their way to tell me how much I'm loved and appreciated.
I'm just wondering if I'm coming off as so fragile for some reason that the guys have gone into 'Comfort Mode'? (It's not that they were insensitive jerks before--it just became an 'all at once sudden rush of uber-comforting' for some reason, and I can't think of anything I've said or done that would indicate I'm in need of that.) |

I had to double-check that I had not gone to "Things You Learned in Your Dreams"

Was the cake frosted to look like it was her dress? I had a cake like that once for a birthday when I was a kid.

The entire barbie doll was standing up inside the cake. There was a hatch on top that opened and she could be raised out of the cake to stand atop it.

Cool! I will be out in June, but just for a few days -- we're driving out in her car and I'm flying back. I imagine my first real trip out there would be no sooner than the end of the year.

I got a weather alert on my phone: "Doppler radar was tracking two areas of strong thunderstorms: One over Florin and Elk Grove and another near Sheldon."
I know Sheldon must be the name of a town, but I like to picture a guy named Sheldon who has a storm localized specifically around him. |

This young child I watch goes in for surgery to have his tonsil and adenoids removed in the morning. I will be taking care of his older (5 year old) brother during the surgery and recovery. I'm nervous and scared. I plan to spend the day distracting the five year old and myself.

Good luck to your young friend, and good on you for helping out. I remember you posting about being nervous and I think it's great that you are making a super helpful contribution in a way that works for you too. I'm sure the parents are incredibly grateful.

I hope all goes well.
My daughter found an apartment in Seattle -- Kirkland, actually. It's one of those modern micro-apartments, affordable and in a good neighborhood. It's furnished, so she won't have to worry about that. I understand she has some job leads, too. i'm very proud of her. |
