Hello Kitty Don't bother petting these cats -- they're working

About five years ago, Chicago resident Paul Nickerson turned to a trio of cats to deal with a rodent infestation after higher-tech pest-control methods failed. He figured he had nothing to lose.

Sorry... I'd still have to pet them, give them chin scritches, and tell them what good kitties they are.*

*That being said, I do know not to pet service animals. Even asking to pet a seeing-eye animal or other type of service animal is taboo.

If you've never handled barn-cats/semi-feral cats... You're in for a bit of a surprise. They are mostly unapproachable and unpettable (made up word). Occasionally one or two will warm up to you, but mostly they want to pet themselves on you, not the other way around.

My grampa had barn cats and they were mostly untouchable. If you tried, you'd be clawed viciously.

According to the article, these cats are pettable (derived made up word) for short spells.

Ok, then I'd TRY to, and suffer the consequences, whether it be a vicious clawing, disappointment as the skittish kitties shied away and fled, or an appreciative purring furball.
